Pulmonary Function Test (PFT)

Purpose

The Pulmonary Function Test (PFT) is a series of breathing tests that show the physician the condition of your lungs.

Test

A Pulmonary Function Test is completed in the Cardiopulmonary Department. Before testing, you’ll be asked questions such as your height, weight, medications, cough, smoking and work history. You will be asked to sit in a special chair, facing a mouthpiece. You’ll breath in and out of this mouthpiece as the machine measures your breathing. Your doctor may order several different tests or breathing exercises, which may include a nebulizer treatment. All tests are completed with you sitting in the chair. You will receive full instructions before each test and coaching during the test. The tests take one to two hours. When testing is complete, the results will be interpreted and forwarded to your doctor.

Important Points

  • Do not use your breathing medication at least six hours prior to the test.
  • Do not smoke for 24 hours prior to having the test.
  • Bring a list of all current medications.
  • Check in at Registration 15 minutes before your appointment.

If you have questions, call the Cardiopulmonary Department at 252-808-6195.
