Dr. Mindy Merritt Honored as 2023 Doctor of the Year

Dr. Mindy Merritt was selected as the 2023 Physician of the Year in Carteret County. The selection of Dr. Merritt was announced during a reception honoring all Carteret County physicians at Sugarloaf Restaurant on Doctors’ Day. The Physician of the Year award is given to a physician who consistently achieves high standards in the practice of medicine and is looked upon as a role model by his or her peers.

Dr. Merritt who is certified by the American Board of Surgeons and is a member of the American Society of Breast Surgeons leads Carteret Health Care's Breast Program in the Cancer Center. Under the leadership of Dr. Merritt, Carteret Health Care's Cancer Center earned accreditation from the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers (NAPBC) of the American College of Surgeons. Carteret Health Care is one of only thirteen facilities in North Carolina who currently have earned accreditation by the NAPBC.

Dr. Merritt earned her medical degree at Pennsylvania State University College of Medicine. She completed her Residency at New Hanover Regional Medical Center in General Surgery. Dr. Merritt completed her Fellowship in Breast Cancer Surgery at the Levine Cancer Institute, Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte, NC. During the multi-disciplinary fellowship, she was exposed to all aspects of breast care including management of genetically predisposed and high-risk patients. She also trained with medical oncology, radiation oncology and plastic surgery among other disciplines. In addition to her interest in breast care, she also has special interests in thyroid surgery and abdominal surgery. and is a surgeon at Carolinas Center for Surgery. 

Together with her husband, Stewart and children, she enjoys exploring the waterways and coastal towns of eastern NC.
