Robert E. Coles, MD

About Dr. Coles

Dr. Robert Coles is a graduate of Harvard University and of Duke University Medical School.

A board-certified orthopedic surgeon, he received his orthopedic surgery training at Duke University Medical Center, where he was chief resident and assistant team physician for both Duke University and North Carolina Central University. Following his residency, he was a sports medicine fellow at the Orthopedic Specialty Hospital in Salt Lake City, where he worked with the U.S. Ski Team.

Dr. Coles has a broad range of knowledge in all types of orthopedic problems, with a particular interest in sports medicine, MAKO robotic surgery, complex knee surgery, ligament reconstruction, shoulder arthroscopy and arthroplasty, hand surgery, and joint replacement. His expertise as an orthopedic surgeon includes arthroscopic, micro, and minimally invasive surgery.

Dr. Coles is a member of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, the North Carolina Orthopedic Association, and the American Orthopedic Society for Sports Medicine and the Piedmont Orthopedic Society.

His passion for sports medicine has led him to serve as team physician for several local high schools. During his free time, he enjoys fishing and boating with his wife and two sons. He is also an instrument rated pilot and an FAA Aviation Medical Examiner.
